Dental Implants

Many people experience tooth loss at some point during their lives. Tooth loss could be caused by cavities, decay, gum disease, or traumatic injury. Sometimes your tooth may fall out on its own, but frequently your dentist may recommend an extraction to prevent further complications.

If you have recently lost a tooth or require a tooth extraction, one of the most popular and effective replacement options is a dental implant. At AOMS, our oral and maxillofacial surgeons are experts at placing implants and preserving your oral health.

We want you to be fully informed about your treatment options and the benefits of using dental implants to replace your missing tooth or teeth. Here are answers to commonly asked questions.

What is a dental implant?

When you lose a tooth, you lose both the root and the crown. Dental implants are a unique option for replacing teeth because they replace the entire tooth. The dental implant’s post replaces your natural tooth’s root and the restoration replaces the crown.

Single Implants

Single implants replace each tooth individually. Many people who are only missing one or two teeth prefer a single implant for each tooth, but this is also an option for replacing several missing teeth.

Multiple Implants

If you are missing several teeth or a full row of teeth, you can replace multiple teeth with an implant-supported denture that attaches to four to six implant posts.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants have many benefits that range from supporting your smile’s natural appearance to supporting your overall health.

The post of a dental implant is made of titanium, the same material that surgeons use for artificial joints. As your jawbone bonds with the titanium, it creates a strong foundation for your artificial tooth or teeth. When cared for properly, the permanent implant can last the lifetime of your other natural teeth.

A dental implant also replicates the function and form of a natural tooth, allowing you to eat the foods you enjoy and maintaining the existing bone structure of your jaw. Most patients also prefer dental implants because they blend in seamlessly with existing teeth, keeping your smile natural looking.

What happens during the dental implant procedure?

There are two major components of the dental implant procedure: the placement and the restoration. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeons at AOMS work with your regular dentist to replace your tooth.

Placement

You will have an appointment at our office to have the dental implant post placed during a surgical procedure. There will then be a period of time when the surgical site heals and the implant bonds with your jaw bone.

Restoration

At a later appointment with your regular dentist or another specialist, you’ll receive a support post and your new replacement tooth.
